Anne Arundel Police Involved In Shooting

UPDATE 11:06 am 01/09/2011: Here is a statement from Anne Arundel County Police:

On Saturday, January 8, 2011 at approximately 1840 hours an Anne Arundel County Police Department on-duty officer was involved in a duty related shooting. The shooting occurred on MD Route 3 (Crain Hwy) south of Crofton and just inside the border of Prince George’s County.

At approximately 1838 hours, an officer from Western District was on routine patrol in a marked Anne Arundel County Police vehicle. The officer was driving southbound on MD Route 3 in the area of Cronson Boulevard located in Crofton, Anne Arundel County. The officer observed a Ford van traveling in front of him with a registration violation. The officer attempted to stop the driver for the violation. However, but the driver of the van failed to respond to the signal to stop and continued driving southbound on MD Route 3.

The Anne Arundel County Police officer disengaged his attempts to stop the driver upon entering Prince George’s County. The officer was at the intersection of MD Route 3 and MD Route 450 (Bowie) preparing to return to Anne Arundel County, when the driver of the van struck the marked police vehicle. The van continued to accelerate and was pushing the police vehicle into opposing traffic. At some point the officer discharged his firearm at the van driver and striking him.

An off-duty federal officer witnessed the events and assisted the Anne Arundel County officer in apprehending the driver. The driver was transported to Prince George’s Hospital Center where his is in stable condition.

The investigation of the shooting is being handled by the Prince George’s County Police Department Homicide Unit.

The suspect was charged with several traffic violations by the Prince George’s County Police Department and is currently being held on an active/open warrant. The Prince George’s County Police Department continues to investigate the shooting and additional charges for the suspect are pending.

UPDATE 09:55 am 01/09/2011: According to the Bowie Patch, a van was pulled over on Route 3 at Route 450 in Anne Arundel County (corner where Jaspers used to be) and a registration violation was noted. The van drove away and the Anne Arundel County officer pursued the vehicle. Somehow, the police officer got in font of the van and the van hit the officer’s car. The officer got out and fired his weapon several times. The chase ended at Route 3 and Route 450 (Annapolis Road headed into Bowie) The suspect is in stable condition in a PG County Trauma Center.

Details are preliminary, by the Crofton Patch is reporting that a chase which began in Anne Arundel County has ended in Prince  Georges County with Anne Arundel County officers shooting a suspect.   Details are unavailable, however, MD Route 3 is closed in both directions ar MD Rout 450.
