Anne Arundel County Community Action Partnership’s Head Start Program

Head Start programs are in need of volunteers, 18 years and older, at seven sites throughout the county to serve as classroom assistants and for informal mentoring of students and families (at least 3.5 hours/week) and as story time readers at least 30 minutes per week. Medical and background checks are required. Also, translators (primarily Spanish) are needed for four hours one-day per week to assist Head Start Teachers with home visits and handbook/program presentations to families. Battle of the Bands– January 29, 2011

The Thirteenth Annual Battle of Anne Arundel County’s high school rock bands will be held starting at 5:00 pm, Sat., January 29, 2011 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. The bands are chosen by the Band Directors of each high school by the December preceding the event. This project helps find more activities for the area’s teens and identifies the musicians who participate in more contemporary music. The proceeds of this usually sold-out event go to the music departments of the winning schools. Volunteers are needed now to head up Security, Advertising and Sponsorship sales. Big Brothers and Sisters of Central Maryland

Want an excuse to be a kid again?  Play catch?  Fly kites? Most volunteers start because they want to give back and help a child.  Soon, they discover being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the best experiences of their life! As a Big, you are simply a friend.  We ensure your experience fits your lifestyle, and we have something for everyone.  Busy people of all ages can get involved.  You can choose the program that works best for you. Volunteers spend time with a child (age 7-15) a few times per month, a few hours each time, over the course of one year.  Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a monthly list of free or low-cost activities to give you ideas and are with you every step of the way. Chesapeake Children’s Museum

This “Hands-on” Museum for children and families has a variety of ongoing volunteer opportunities throughout the year. There is a current need for a bookkeeper to log expenses and income and for volunteers to help with exhibits upkeep in one or more exhibit areas; both tasks would entail about 2 hrs./week.   • 2 to 3:30 pm, Wed., Dec. 29, 2010, Hispanic New Year’s Eve: Volunteers are needed to help with this event celebrating, the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 fiesta style with Latin American traditions. The event is intended for children ages 6–11.

Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating

CRAB promotes the joy of sailing in specially modified boats to persons with disabilities and their families. CRAB volunteer skippers, crewmembers and dockhands offer monthly “SailFree” events every fourth Sunday of the month from April through October from 10 am-4 pm at the Marina at Sandy Point State Park. Volunteers are needed year round as members of the Board of Directors, to assist with sailing programs for children of Central Special School and MD School for the Blind, fleet, & equipment maintenance, and more. Currently, CRAB is also seeking volunteers from the community to help with setting up a structured volunteer program with record keeping, recognition, training, etc. Contact Don Backe at 410-626-0273; see web site: www.crab-sailing.org.

Cool Kids Campaign

The mission of the nonprofit Cool Kids Campaign is to provide pediatric oncology patients a higher quality of life for themselves and their families. This is accomplished through a variety of participatory fundraising events, including an Ebay store in Pasadena, MD, “Whatddya Got to Sell”, and a newsletter all of which serve to connect kids and their families while facing the challenges of cancer. Salvation Army

Volunteers are needed to drop off food donations Monday through Friday for the Salvation Army’s food pantry on Hilltop Lane. Suggested food items include nonperishable canned goods and boxed food. Donations of toiletries are also welcome. Groups that hold food drives can make arrangements to have the food picked up.  Volunteers are needed for a variety 2010 Christmas Programs including kettle sites, Toy and Food Drives, and the Angel Tree program. Donations are being sought of meals for sorters of Angel Tree gifts, sponsorship of Angel Trees, and office help to answer phones and other clerical duties.  For more information and to volunteer or make donations, contact Captains Richard and/or Ruth New at 410-263-4091 or [email protected].

Sarah’s House Volunteer Orientations –Every Week

Sarah’s House is a supportive housing program for homeless women, children, and men in Anne Arundel County providing case management, childcare, transportation and employment services at Ft. Meade.  Volunteer orientations are offered most Friday evenings 7:00pm-8:30pm at Sarah’s House.  Volunteers can work directly with guests or behind the scenes. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, businesses and groups of all faiths and ages. There is an ongoing need for donation of items such as large diapers, baby wipes, general cleaning supplies, bathroom tissue and more. Volunteers 14 and under must have adult supervision.   • 10am until 4pm Sat., December 18, 2010: Volunteers are needed to wrap gifts, organize holiday donations, and assist with clean up. Contact Bruce Clopein.
  • 2:00-6:00 pm, Sun., Jan. 16, 2011, A Celebration of Women: This fundraiser being held at the KAVA restaurant in Annapolis features great food, margaritas, martini’s and wine while listening to relaxing live music, a great silent auction (lots of door prizes), seated massages—shopping Cabi clothing, jewelry and more all while supporting a program that helps empower women to achieve independence and strengthen their families. Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE Chapter 390)

This group of volunteers with entrepreneurial experience is sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration to offer mentoring to small business owners and new entrepreneurs; free counseling and general and specialized workshops are provided to clients in Anne Arundel and surrounding counties.  The Chapter has a need for business men and women willing to give their time to help entrepreneurs.  We invite working and retired executives, small business owners, educators and other professionals to become volunteer counselors.  In addition to counselors, SCORE seeks volunteers with strong organizational skills to work with counselors and clients in outreach programs, marketing, setting up and running workshops and general office support.
