PSC Approves More BGE Rate Hikes. BGE rates are going up immediately for residential electric and natural gas customers.The Public Service Commission issued a ruling Monday increasing electric and natural gas distribution charges for customers.The average electric bill will go up around $16 a year. Natural gas bills will go up about $10 a year.The increase approved is smaller than what the utility requested.The utility may ask the commission to reconsider its proposal.

6th Grader Dies At Maryland School. A Prince George’s County elementary school is mourning a sixth-grade student.The acting principal at J. Frank Dent Elementary in Fort Washington issued a statement Monday, saying the student had died but that the death was not a result of any injury sustained at the school.The student was not identified by school officials.Prince George’s County fire department spokesman Mark Brady said rescuers were dispatched to the school Monday morning after the student suffered some kind of medical emergency. Medics performed CPR and took the student to a hospital.Grief counselors were called to the school.

Track Owners, Racing Reps Meet On Industry’s Future. The future of Maryland horse racing — and the Preakness in particular — was the subject of high-level talks in Annapolis on Monday.The office of Gov. Martin O’Malley called a meeting with track owners and representatives of the horse racing community to come up with ideas on how to save the industry, according to 11 News reporter David Collins.The governor called horse track stake holders, horsemen, breeders, the Maryland Jockey Club, Penn National Gaming and the Maryland Racing Commission together for the roundtable discussion.

O’Malley Offers $15K Buyouts To State Employees. Maryland’s governor is offering buyouts to executive branch employees in a bid to cut the size of state government.The executive order signed Tuesday by Gov. Martin O’Malley offers $15,000 plus $200 for each year of service and three months of medical, prescription and dental benefits to select employees.Those accepted can’t rejoin state government for 18 months.The governor’s office did not say how many of the state’s 79,000 employees would be eligible for the buyout.O’Malley said in a statement that the state continue to face significant budget challenges and needs to cut costs. The governor’s office said eligible employees have until Jan. 4 to apply.
