Annapolis Youth Services Bureau
This organization provides youth oriented comprehensive professional services to youth for the general prevention of juvenile delinquency. Mentors are needed for youth ages 5 – 18 after background checks and training. Volunteers are also needed for educational and cultural activities for children. AYSB is dedicated to serving as a positive force in improving the lives and well-being of children, by providing, and advocating for, prevention and early intervention programs and treatment services for children, youth, and families. Anne Arundel County Fire Department
Volunteers with four-wheel-drive vehicles are needed to register their availability to provide transportation for medical personnel, emergency workers, or dialysis patients during winter storms. Contact 410-222-8040.
Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management
9 am–11 am, Fri., Jan. 28, 2011, Disaster Volunteer Management Training: This free training will teach agencies about the process of disaster volunteer management, and how they can effectively access and utilize volunteers post-disaster. After taking this course, you will know how spontaneous volunteers can be matched to your agency’s needs and make a real difference for your ability to respond. The goal is to utilize volunteers in ways that compliment response and recovery efforts after an emergency or disaster instead of complicating the efforts of first responders. This workshop will teach you how your agency can prepare to use volunteers to respond following a disaster, even if you do not have an ongoing volunteer program. The course is being held at the Emergency Operation Center (Henry Hein Building, 7480 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Glen Burnie, MD 21061). Anne Arundel County Public Library
Library Branches have differing needs for both on-going projects and short-term volunteer activities. Some examples include cleaning and re-casing books, CD and DVD collections, assembly of Story-Time projects, copying, data processing or other computer projects, and file maintenance. Volunteer shifts are often flexible and may include some evenings or weekends in addition to day-time hours. Some Branches can work with volunteers as young as 14 and may keep applications on file to call prospective volunteers when needs arise. Training is provided. See www.aacpl.net. Cats R Us, Inc.
This nonprofit feral cat rescue group operates two small shelters in the Annapolis and Arnold areas. The main focus is TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return). The shelter in Arnold is a “TNR” shelter, in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, sterilized, and eartipped for identification by veterinarians. This is a NO KILL facility and these cats will stay with CRU as long as it takes for them to find their forever home. Qualified foster volunteers are needed to provide foster homes. Volunteers age 8 and older, are needed to assist with cleaning the shelters, to attend adoption shows at PetSmart in Annapolis, to make cat/kitten home deliveries, or to sit and spend time with wonderful cats. An adult should accompany volunteers younger than age 16. Training will be provided for shelter and adoption workers. Parental consent forms are required. Emmaus Center
Emmaus Center is a nonprofit organization which serves poor and homeless people to give them a sense of community by providing resources that otherwise would not be available. There is an immediate need for: 1. A volunteer bookkeeper with skills and experience in small business bookkeeping; 2. A volunteer grant writer, ideally someone who has a track record in researching potential grants and knowledge of nonprofit and faith-based funding sources; 3. Volunteer counselors with experience in working in areas of drug and alcohol abuse to work with adult male and female homeless persons and to develop community resources to whom such persons can be referred; the counselor would also facilitate working with a Pastoral Care Associate; 4. Heartland Hospice Services
Heartland Hospice provides hospice care to patients with limited life expectancy as well as support to their caregivers. Volunteers, age 18 and up with a driver’s license, are needed as Friendly Visitors to visit patients in their home or nursing home, as Vigil Volunteers to sit with patients without immediate family who are nearing death, as Bereavement Volunteers to call on families of those recently deceased. Clerical and Special Project Volunteers are also needed to help with mailings, office projects, and to create special gifts for patients. Mentor, Encourage, Lift and Love, Inc. (M.E.L.L.)
M.E.L.L. provides parenting skills and resources to male and female teen parents. Volunteers are needed as guest speakers and mentors. We are currently seeking a Program Coordinator to facilitate monthly group mentoring/ support groups. Severna Park Assistance Network (SPAN)
SPAN in cooperation with area churches help persons in their community in need of crisis assistance because of evictions, utility turn-off notices, emergency medical or prescription needs, food panty or other services. SPAN is located behind Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 400 Benfield Road. SPAN is looking for sponsors for the holiday caring program for Christmas. Toys for Tots Campaign–U.S. Marine Corps Reserve
The local Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots is a toy drive for the underprivileged children in Anne Arundel County.
