Sex Offender, John Riva, Sentenced

John Riva of Crofton, MD sentenced for sex crimes against children
John Riva

John Riva, of Crofton was charged in June 2010 for several sexual crimes against children. Today, as a result of a plea bargain he was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Paul Hackner.

The Crofton Patch has a good article on the case and how it tore apart the neighborhood; however, while the sentence was indeed 10 years, all but 18 months of it was suspended plus he will receive credit for time already served according to court records. He will also have a 5 year probationary period and is required to register as a sex offender.

He is also accused of a second set of charges paralleling the first. Like the first, a plea arrangement has been made and he is scheduled to be sentenced on December 2, 2010 on those charges. According to the Patch article, Judge Hackner indicated that he would be issuing a similar sentence for those charges. Quite possibly the two sentences would be allowed to run concurrently. It should be noted that the sentence will be served in a County jail and not a state prison.
