Dr. Ben Carson Speaks Tomorrow Night

Whether a budding scientist, aspiring mathematician, young artist or up-and-coming community leader, the love of learning, the drive to achieve new heights, the confidence to inquire and push beyond known limits are all essential ingredients to achieve greatness in life. Few people alive today embody these qualities as fully as world renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson.

The Y of Central Maryland will host “What If… Inspiring Students to Reach New Heights”, a Town Hall Meeting with Dr. Ben Carson on Friday, November 5th, 2010 at Annapolis High School, from 7p-8pm. Dr. Carson has risen to achieve true greatness as a physician, humanitarian and community leader. A charismatic speaker who has been honored by the Library of Congress as a “Living Legend,” Dr. Ben Carson is respected around the globe as a gifted and accomplished physician, scientist and humanitarian. His personal story of triumph over adversity is nothing short of inspiring. His commitment to motivating young people to achieve their very best and to pursue the science and math fields is unparalleled.

Dr. Carson will launch the Y of Central Maryland’s new STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) after-school initiative in Anne Arundel County. This proud partnership between the Y of Central Maryland and the Carson Scholars program is designed to instill in students the love of math and science and critical thinking necessary to spark a lifelong interest and career in these disciplines.

At the November 5th Town Hall Meeting at Annapolis High School, Dr. Carson will discuss his passion for learning and inquiry, drive to overcome challenges, love of discovery, and determination for greatness. It is these necessary attributes for scientific inquiry that led him on his path to exceptional achievement. In addition to his inspiring talk, the audience will be invited to participate in an open town hall style question and answer forum with Dr. Carson.

It’s no secret that the U.S. lags behind many developed nations in terms of the numbers of students who choose to go into the sciences as a profession. If we’re ever to close this alarming gap, we must first begin with igniting a passion for critical inquiry and investigation in our youth. The STEM program being launched in Anne Arundel County by the Y of Central Maryland and Carson Scholars, funded in part by Northup Grumman Corporation, is designed to address this challenge and is being planned as a prototype for a rollout across the U.S.

The Y of Central Maryland is a charitable organization dedicated to developing the full potential of every individual through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Carson Scholars Fund scholarship program awards students who have embraced high levels of academic excellence and community service. It is with great pride that we join together to launch this exciting new program in Anne Arundel County.

“This event perfectly reflects our mission to help every individual reach their highest potential in spirit, mind and body. Dr. Carson’s ability to overcome adversity, his commitment to achievement, health, social responsibility and youth development are cornerstones of our mission. We are so proud to be able to bring this special event to the students and families of Anne Arundel County,”

John K. Hoey, President & CEO of the Y of Central Maryland.

David Donnelly, a two time recipient of the Dr. Carson Scholar’s Award will be on stage to introduce Dr Ben Carson and discuss what winning the scholarships have meant to him. Mr. Donnelly is currently enrolled in Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC.

All proceeds will be used to help launch the Y’s STEM program in Anne Arundel County and to provide scholarships for children to participate who otherwise cannot afford it. Tickets are almost sold out and likely will not be available at the door.
