Anne Arundel Cop Cops A Plea

| November 05, 2010, 08:41 AM | 3 Comments

Former Anne Arundel County Police  Lt. James Cifala has copped a plea for the inappropriate relationship he had with a 16 year old girl. Cifala was a 27 year veteran of the Anne Arundel County Police Department and also owned the Rita’s Water Ice franchise in Edgewater along with his wife.

Yesterday, Cifala agreed to a plea bargain which will send him to federal prison for five years. He has pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography while the other charges have been dropped.

If the plea agreement is accepted, he is expected to be sentenced on December 21, 2010.

Cifala was initially charged with having sex with and sending sexually explicit text messages to a 16 year old girl. The complaint also stated the teenage girl had also sent naked pictures to the officer. According to an affadavit, FBI agents conducted a search warrant of Cifala’s home on January 20, 2010 and observed furnishings that allegedly match the background of a sexually explicit photograph Cifala sent to the girl. At the time, the charges indicated that he was facing a 20 year prison sentence.

Eye On Annapolis covered this story extensively when it broke in January 2010.

He will get the plea because he’s a cop, and they seem to think they are above the law….How many cops do you see on their cell phones while driving?????

  2. NoWay2SarahPalin says:

He was not a cop at the time of this incident…he was retired. For sensationalism, the media threw in that he was a “former” police officer….oh, and by the way he also owned a Rita’s Water Ice establishment.

The fact that he “used” to be a cop was thrown in to attract readers…I am sure that someone will put a post in direct contradiction to my statements…however, go to the sex offender registry and get access to the public court documents. Nowhere in the charging documents is he listed as an “active” cop.

@Noway. At the time of sentencing he was an ex-cop. At the time of the incident he was a cop. He was arrested at the station and was suspended without pay until he was indicted and then either was released or resigned (not sure which as it is a “personnel issue”). But he most certainly was an active duty cop when this happened and when he was arrested.

    From WBAL:

Cifala is a 27-year veteran of the department and lives in Edgewater. Police said he has been suspended without pay.
