What If, With Dr. Ben Carson

Dr. Ben Carson, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center was brought to Annapolis Senior High School by the The Y Of Central Maryland to present his compelling program, What If..

The evening began with a reception with local community leaders, school officials, many children from challenged neighborhoods, and David Donnelly. David was a two0time winner of a Carson Foundation Scholarship and was given the opportunity to introduce Dr. Carson and to explain how the scholarships had impacted his life. David was a student at Central Middle School in Edgewater.

Dr. Carson spoke of his less than humble beginnings–of growing up in the projects of Detroit and Boston. He spoke of his determination to succeed and the racial slurs that were lobbed against him. He spoke about how he was known as “Benny The Dummy” and was quite literally the dumbest person in school–until he discovered his calling.

Carson was influenced by his mother who refused to believe that her children could not have anything less than the best.  The discussion was moving and cut deep. After his presentation, Dr. Carson took questions from the audience–both children and adults.  Questions ranged from “how many patients do you lose a year?” (less than a handful) to “do you consider yourself a Libertarian?” (he calls his party the “Common Sense Party” but is registered as an Independent).

When the opportunity arises to hear this man speak, take it and don’t look back.  To get a glimpse of his life, his book, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story is a great read!
