Anne Arundel County Dept. of Aging & Disabilities
Foster Grandparent Program needs volunteers to work with special needs children. Seniors, 60+ years, who are income eligible, volunteer approx. 15-20 hours/week at schools, Head Start Centers or other non-profit childcare facilities, working one-on-one with children who really need them. A tax-free stipend, transportation, a meal at the site and paid training are provided. We are also seeking Advisory Council Members for the program. Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank
Founded in 1988 their mission is to fight hunger by assuring that all county citizens in need have access to food and other necessities. Volunteers are needed to sort food and clothing for distribution 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and on occasional weekends (by appointment only) in Crownsville. Especially needed: volunteers with pick-up trucks during the day and help with phones, copying, other office duties (8:30 am – 2:30 pm), data base, computers, webmaster. - “LET’s GO”, an acronym for Leadership, Engineering, Technology & Science Generating Opportunities, is a pilot program at all five of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Anne Arundel County. One of the goals of LETS GO is to create a pipeline of future scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Part of LET’S GO is continuous counseling, tutoring and support provided by mentors and other volunteers, many recruited by Dr. Clark “Corky” Graham, who is spearheading this project along with midshipmen from the USNA Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. The Caring Collection, Inc.
This nonprofit organization raises funds for cancer research and patient care at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital by making and selling stained glass angels and sun catchers. Volunteers help make sun catchers every Mon. Tues and Thurs. in the Annapolis studio. No experience is needed. Volunteers, age 14 and up, learn the art of stained glass while creating the artwork to raise funds. Also needed are volunteers interested in marketing to help contact the media to promote sales of the art work. Centro de Ayuda (Center of Help)
The Center of Help is a non-profit which provides a variety of social services to the Latino community in the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County with support offices in Annapolis and Glen Burnie. There is currently a pressing need for two office volunteers to do front desk duties and serve as Assistant/Office Manager. The Center is also recruiting new Board of Director members, especially those with business savvy that is well respected in the community, and as ESOL and academic achievement educators, writers to prepare articles/releases for the press and prepare grants, and to assist with media/marketing/public relations, including political liaison; event and parent-school involvement coordinators as well as social services advocates are also needed. The Metropolitan Washington Ear
This organization provides free multi-media reading services for visually impaired, blind, or physically disabled people who cannot read print. They help to bring visually impaired people into the mainstream, rather than segregating them from society. Volunteers, age 18 and up, can help out in a variety of ways including reading periodicals into a computer, reading publications for airing on a 24-hour closed circuit radio broadcast, for a speakers bureau for community outreach, and for receiving forwarded calls at home to provide lookup services in Yellow Pages, ads, etc. Volunteers are also needed during office hours for data entry, special projects, or large mailings. V-LINC (Formerly Volunteers for Medical Engineering)
Volunteers with expertise in medicine, engineering and technology are needed to develop unique solutions that assist people with disabilities manage their daily life. Volunteers age 21 and up who are active or retired medical/rehabilitation professionals or those with engineering backgrounds are needed to assess disabilities and to design and build one-of-a-kind devices for clients with disabilities. Also needed are volunteers, age 16 and up, in Baltimore to work weekdays in the computer loan center testing, repairing, and refurbishing donated computer equipment.
