Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk 2010, Saturdays, Oct. 9, and Oct. 30, 2010

The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk® is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Volunteers are needed the day of the following walks:

  • 7 am–12 noon, Sat., Oct. 9, 2010, Memory Walk 2010, Severna Park: Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including, set-up, registration, route guides, memory garden, and more; much of the work requires substantial physical effort.  Registration for the event will start at the Severn School in Severna Park at 8:00 am, and the 2.5 mile walk at 9:00 am.
  • 7 am–12 noon, Sat., Oct. 30, 2010, Memory Walk 2010, Baltimore: Volunteers, Age 13 & up (with adult supervision) are needed for a variety of tasks including, set-up, registration, route guides, memory garden, and more; much of the work requires substantial physical effort.  The walk will start at the Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville at 9:00 am.

Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues

This group of twenty-one citizen volunteers promotes positive change for county citizens with disabilities. Members include citizens with disabilities, family members of individuals with disabilities, citizens with an interest in assisting individuals with disabilities, a member of the Anne Arundel County Council and representatives of agencies providing services to individuals with disabilities. The commissioners assess needs; investigate opportunities for improvements in quality of life; support community participation; and advise the County Executive on disability issues. Meetings take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month- from 1 to 3 pm. Volunteers are also needed to serve on committees and participate in ongoing activities.   • 1:00-4:00 pm, Sat., Oct. 30, 2010, Disability Awareness Day: This event, open to the public, is being held at Westfield Annapolis Mall near The Pottery Barn on the Bestgate Rd. side. A variety of county agencies will be featured with information and help for those with disabilities, including: Transportation, Employment, Housing, Recreation, and Access to Services. County Executive John R. Leopold will present Accessibility and Employer Awards and a special award will be presented to Nancy Patterson, Volunteer Coordinator for Canine Companions for Independence. Bay Theatre Company

The Bay Theatre is a professional, nonprofit repertory theatre company founded in 2002 in Annapolis to produce plays of superior quality and richness for audiences of diverse ages and cultures. The theatre company also promotes theatre education for students of all ages and provides working opportunities for theatre artists. Volunteers, age 16 and up, are needed for office assistance, one day per week, at the box office, and as ushers for performances. Also, hosts are needed for many of our visiting actors and directors that need a place to stay while they are in production. For more information call 410-268-1333 or [email protected]. Chesapeake Ecology Center

The Chesapeake Ecology Center (CEC) works with its members, volunteers, community groups, and students, including at-risk students at Adams Academy at Adams Park (where it is based), to provide environmental education and, at the same time, develop on-the-ground habitat restoration/protection projects. The CEC holds volunteer education/planting days and tours mid-April through November, and provides technical assistance to a variety of community and school groups for their projects. In addition to numerous on-the-ground restoration projects at the CEC and elsewhere, it promotes conservation landscaping through a variety of media, and through presentations and tours of the CEC’s 18 Native Plant Demonstration Gardens and Sites. •     9 a.m.-1 p.m., Sat., October 23, 2010, Make a Difference Day: Chesapeake Ecology Center Exhibit and RainScaping Exhibit at cluster-wide school/community event at Truxton Park, Annapolis, MD. Exhibits will highlight programs and partnerships at various schools, including the Adams Academy/Chesapeake Ecology Center/RainScaping partnership.

•     9 a.m.-noon, Sunday, October 31, 2010, CEC Volunteer Day: We will be joined by the Navy Alumi group and other interested volunteers. Snacks, gloves and tools will be provided.

Greater Annapolis Interfaith Network (GAIN), Inc., 10/24/10 Annual Celebration

From 2–5 pm, Sun., Oct. 24, 2010, GAIN is holding its Fourth Annual Annapolis Celebration of Faith Communities & Good Works at the Roger ‘Pip’ Moyer Recreation Center, 273Hilltop Lane  in Annapolis.  See all the good work and community services area faith-based community organizations are doing. Grab your kids; bring your friends, family and the neighbors to enjoy food, networking and fellowship. Hearts & Homes for Youth (Mary’s Mount Manor)

This organization helps troubled children and youth who are abused, neglected or runaways, become independent, productive adults by providing a broad spectrum of educational, residential, independent living and mental health programs throughout Maryland.  In Harwood, the Mary’s Mount Manor is a therapeutic group home for emotionally disturbed young women who have suffered abuse, neglect or abandonment.  Volunteers over 18 are needed for tutoring, mentoring, internships, renovation projects, recreation sponsors, office assistance, and beautification projects.  Contact Loretta d’Eustachio at 301-589-8444 ext.212. Maryland Business Roundtable for Education, Achievement Counts Speakers Bureau

Volunteers with various backgrounds from the business community are needed to share their work experiences with 7-9th grade classes across the state to help kids understand why doing well in high school is important to their futures. The Achievement Counts Speakers Bureau is a nationally recognized program designed to help Maryland high school students learn what it will take to succeed in the workforce. Speakers participate in a 3-hr training session in their County and receive a training manual and lesson plan. Volunteer speakers typically are asked to make four 45-minute classroom presentations during the school year. Speakers select schools, dates and times that are convenient to them. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Chesapeake Region

The mission of MADD is to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. Volunteer opportunities range from clipping articles out of local newspapers to speaking at Victim Impact Panels to representing MADD Chesapeake at community functions. Families and group volunteers are welcome. MADD is currently looking for individuals that read the newspaper who can help locate drunk driving crash victims so that free services can be offered to such victims.  Please contact MADD at 410-964-5757 or 1-800-446-6233 or e-mail [email protected]. Court Monitoring Program: Adult volunteers are needed to observe all aspects of the court system by monitoring cases and collecting data to ensure accountability in DWI/DUI cases.
