Students seeking an internship in a variety of fields from construction engineering to cryptography need look no further than one website, state officials announced Tuesday.Maryland state officials, joined by education and military leaders, announced the launch of a website designed to connect college students with internship opportunities related to Defense Base Closure and Realignment. The BRAC Internship Information Center website includes resources for college students seeking internships with military missions and defense firms.
Audit Finds Shortcomings At DJS. A state audit has found “significant deficiencies” with monitoring and procurement of youth care contracts in the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. The audit released Wednesday by the Maryland Department of Legislative Services also found that employee criminal background checks were not always conducted in a timely manner required by state law.It also found that certain employees received overtime compensation, even though they were ineligible to receive it based on their employment classifications.
511 System To Alert Drivers To Traffic Conditions Coming Soon. A system that allows drivers to get traffic conditions by dialing 511 will be coming to Maryland next year.To get road conditions statewide, Marylanders currently have to visit the State Highway Administration’s website, where traffic is updated from its operations center 24 hours a day.But by next fall, all motorists will have to do is dial 511 or visit the 511 website. The service uses voice recognition and it doesn’t require punching numbers on the phone, so it will allow drivers to comply with hand-free cell phone laws.With 511, travelers can get road conditions, road closures, transit reports and more.
1540-Pound Pumpkin On Display In Maryland. Valley View Farms is displaying one of the largest pumpkins ever grown.The 1,540-pound pumpkin went on display Wednesday at the Cockeysville business and will remain there, along with other giant pumpkins, until Nov. 6.Carrie Engel of Valley View Farms said the pumpkin is the largest ever placed on display in Maryland.
