Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk 2010, Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010

Walk with us toward a world without Alzheimer’s disease! We’re getting ready for this fall’s Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk® events, and we want you to get in on the action by forming or joining teams of walkers. The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk® is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. §            7 am–12 noon, Sat., Oct. 9, 2010, Memory Walk 2010, Severna Park: Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including, set-up, registration, route guides, memory garden, and more; much of the work requires substantial physical effort.  Registration for the event will start at the Severn School in Severna Park at 8:00 am, and the 2.5 mile walk at 9:00 am. Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region

The Arc advocates for and supports County citizens with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed to help with fund raising, assist in the office, with special events and to serve on the Board of Directors.

§            7:00–11 pm, Fri., October 29, 2010 – “Saints and Sinners Cocktail Party”: Volunteers, sponsors, and participants are being sought for this incredible fundraising event being held at The Loews Annapolis Hotel Powerhouse where we transform the three levels into the Sinners’ Lounge, The Waiting Room, and The Saints’ Sanctuary. Enjoy the jazz in the Lounge and feast on devilish dishes, or wander up to the Sanctuary and enjoy heavenly deserts and then bust a move.  Call 410-990-1900 or visit the web site for ticket information. Arundel House of Hope

Arundel House of Hope plans to open a new Wellness and Care Center by the end of the year which will result in an increase of services and positive opportunities for the shelters participants.  AHOH is currently in need of medical volunteers. Bello Machre

Bello Machre is a non-profit organization providing loving care, homes, and support services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed at 3 PM on Thurs., Nov. 11, 2010 and at 10 AM on Sat., Nov. 13, 2010 to participate in the Fall Yard Clean up at several locations in the county. Groups are encouraged to take on projects including: planting, raking, mulching and other yard tasks. In addition, volunteers, age 17 and up, are needed to paint three bedrooms in the Linthicum area. This would be a great project for a dedicated group looking for volunteer service. Also, volunteers are needed at the main office in Glen Burnie at 10 AM, Thurs., Nov. 11, 2010 to help stuff and seal envelopes for the fall fundraising campaign. Lunch will be provided. Friends of Colonial Players

Have you always wanted to be part of the theater, but didn’t know how? The FRIENDS of Colonial Players have many volunteer possibilities, including: working in the box office, ushering at performances, set painting and construction, stage crew, costumes, handling properties, helping with lights and sound, serving as Stage Manager for shows, arranging parties and other socials, and more. Historic Annapolis Foundation

Volunteers are needed in the areas of museum tours and education, horticulture in the William Paca House gardens, public programs and special events, membership services, and marketing.  William Paca House docents present tours on weekdays and weekends. Historic Annapolis Foundation also needs volunteers for its new living history site, The Hogshead at 43 Pinkney Street. Volunteers will be trained to interpret for visitors what life was like during time of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Learn about the fur trade, leather crafts, colonial weapons, colonial games and much more, then share that knowledge with guests.   • 4:30–9:15 pm, Fri. & Sat., Nov. 5 & 6, 2010, Ninth Annual Annapolis by Candlelight: Private home owners will open their homes along Duke of Gloucester, Conduit, Market, Charles and Green Streets. This is a rare opportunity for the public to view the interiors of beautiful homes from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Volunteers are needed and will be placed in different rooms in different homes informing visitors about the history of the home and the objects inside, helping to direct the flow of visitors through the home. Each home is staffed by an HAF volunteer known as a house captain who will provide information about the home to volunteers upon their arrival for their shift. Volunteers are asked to work a single shift on either Fri., Nov. 5th or Sat., Nov. 6th. To ensure all houses are staffed and ready to open promptly and to guarantee that shift changes occur smoothly, shifts will be from 4:30p.m.–7:15p.m. and from 6:45p.m. –9:15p.m. Contact Marcos Salaverria at 410-267-6312 or [email protected] to obtain application forms which must be filled out and returned by October 1, 2010.

Robert A. Pascal Youth & Family Services

Robert A. Pascal Youth and Family Services, Inc. is a counseling center dedicated to the emotional and mental health of children, adolescents, adults, and families in Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas.

  • 8:00–11:30 a.m., Sun., Oct. 24, 2010, Annual 5K Run and Halloween Fun Walk: Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, trail marking, runner assistance and general race organization for this fundraising event.  All volunteers will report to the Park Plaza Lot in front of Robert A. Pascal Youth and Family Services at 570H Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD.  Documentation will be provided for those in need of Independent Service Learning Hours.  For more information, call 410-975-0067 and visit the web site at www.rpascal.org.

Snow Patrol

The Department of Aging and Disabilities is partnering with the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County and the Citizens Corps Council to recruit and deploy church youth groups, families, scouts, and high school groups as well as adult organizations for the “Snow Patrol”. Isolated seniors with medical needs and individuals with disabilities need assistance with removing snow and ice during winter storms so that driveways and sidewalks can be accessed by caregivers or so that the affected seniors can reach the street to be provided transportation for medical care, etc. This is a call for groups to register with the Volunteer Center for the Snow Patrol. Volunteer Groups are needed now and must pre-register in order to help residents with disabilities and medical needs during this winter’s storms. Winter Relief Program, late October through early-April–Rotating Locations

Forty-eight churches will provide sheltering sites and an additional 14 churches are partnering with them in the county to support a shelter program from late October until April. For one week at a time, participating churches host men (and some can also accommodate women) in need of a hot meal and shelter for the night and breakfast the next morning. The Winter Relief Program needs volunteers to assist at the Intake Center at 514 N. Crain Hwy. in Glen Burnie and to be transportation escorts for showers for our guests. Interested volunteers can contact Phil Baily at 410-863-4888 or [email protected].
