Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues

This group of 21 citizen volunteers promotes positive change for county citizens with disabilities. The commissioners assess needs; investigate opportunities for improvements in quality of life; support community participation; and advise the County Executive on disability issues. County Executive John R. Leopold is now accepting resumes from individuals who would be interested in serving as a voting member of the Commission. 1:00–4:00 pm, Sat., Oct. 30, 2010, disABILITY Awareness Day 2010: The event to be held at Westfield Annapolis Mall will include a variety of county agencies with information and help for those with disabilities, including: Transportation, Employment, Housing, Recreation, and Access to Services. Anne Arundel County Department of Aging & Disabilities

Volunteers are needed for The Ombudsman Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is seeking volunteers to assist in protecting the rights and promoting the well-being of residents of long-term care facilities. The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program also helps those residents to maintain control over their own lives and personal dignity. Long-term care facilities include nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. Responsibilities include receiving and resolving complaints made by or for such residents. The program seeks to educate consumers and long-term care providers about residents’ rights and good care practices. The program also provides information to the public about nursing homes and other long-term care facilities and services. Volunteers will complete five training sessions in the classroom over a two-week period and then participate in field work. After completing their training, volunteers assist the Ombudsman program on the average of two to three hours per week. Training will be offered in early October. Anne Arundel County Family Assistance Fund, Champions for Children Walk, Sunday, Sept. 26. 2010

Volunteer walkers and workers are needed to help raise money for at-risk children and families in the County by this first annual event sponsored by the AA County Family Assistance Fund. Registration is at 8:00 am and the walk starts at 9:00 am, on Sun., Sept. 26, 2010, at 80 West St. in Annapolis, 21401. Arnold Volunteer Fire Department

The Arnold Volunteer Fire Department is always recruiting volunteer members, age 16 and up, to serve both as firefighters and to assist with administrative tasks. Current needs include firefighter/EMT, building maintenance, public outreach and fire safety education, fundraising, event planning, and administrative assistance. All firefighting training and equipment is provided free of charge. Arthritis Foundation – Southern Maryland Branch

The Maryland chapter serves the residents of Maryland (except Montgomery and PG Co.), Delaware, and Eastern West Virginia, by making the public knowledgeable about arthritis and the importance of appropriate treatment and by helping people take personal control of their arthritis through self-help classes, warm water and land exercise programs and support and education groups. Assistance League of the Chesapeake

Volunteers are needed for community programs including:  “guest” readers at public elementary schools, tutors at Georgetown East Elementary School in Annapolis and participating in casual sing-a-long programs for seniors at various local assisted living facilities. Member-volunteers prepare and deliver emergency preparedness kits to home-bound seniors throughout the area and present educational puppet shows to local public elementary schools on topics such as bullying, special needs, etc. Volunteers are also needed for fundraising to support these programs. Leadership Anne Arundel (LAA)

The mission of this non-profit organization is to educate and train a diverse group of individuals to become more effective community leaders. Applications are now being accepted through Sept. 24th for the 2010-1011 Neighborhood Leadership Academy. Participants receive full scholarships to attend this program. Maryland State Archives

Learn about Maryland history and the treasures preserved at the State Archives in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 years of age and older, are needed Monday through Saturday, between 8:30 – 10:00 am and/or 3:00 – 4:30 pm to assist in access and understanding of the records of the State of Maryland. Volunteers scan, index or keyboard many historic records, assist patrons with genealogy, research 19th century African-American records, and colonial records. Training is provided. National Aquarium Chesapeake Bay Initiative Habitat Restoration Project

Sat., Sept. 25, 2010, Fort McHenry Field Day (National Public Lands Day): The ten-acre tidal wetland bordering Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine now serves as a refuge for many species of wildlife including sea ducks, heron, muskrats, and red-winged blackbirds Join the Conservation Department at the National Aquarium in Baltimore at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to help clean up the bay.  The National Aquarium in Baltimore is looking for community volunteers, ages 14 and older, to participate, rain or shine. Activities include debris cleanup, planting native marsh grasses, trail maintenance and more. Space is limited.
