The Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region

8:30 am, Sun., Sept. 19, 2010, “Be a Superhero – Run for a Reason”, 5K Run/1KWalk/Wheel: Volunteers, sponsors and participants are being sought for the third annual run to support children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 23rd Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, September 25, 2010

Volunteer opportunities are available now, the day before, and on the event date for the 23rd Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival. The Festivalraises an awareness of the African-American heritage and the common challenges encountered by all ethnic groups striving to preserve their culture.  The festival will be held at the Annapolis City Dock, Sat., Sept. 25, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: set up, refreshments, clean up, and more.  Volunteers may download a volunteer application from the website: http://www.kuntakinte.org/applications/Volunteer_Application 2010.pdf/ or contact the festival office for more information at 443.623.2856 or [email protected].

State’s Attorney’s Office

Volunteers are needed to work on projects in the Annapolis offices with office support staff, advocates and attorneys. Computer literacy is a must and background checks are required. Internships are available. Call Jane Strong at 410-222-1740, Xtn 3895 or [email protected].

  • 7:00 am, Sun., Sept. 19, 2010, 13th Annual Victims’ Fund Run, a 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk:

Patrons and participants, and volunteers are needed to support this worthy event sponsored by the States Attorney’s Office & Anne Arundel Bar Association which supports victims of crime. Volunteers are needed to help before and on the day of this fundraiser. The race is on the B&A Trail beginning at 8:15 a.m.; there is a new gathering place for registration, etc. at Severna Park Senior High School, 60 Robinson Rd.  The Post-Race Party includes great food, awards and prizes. International Day of Peace Vigil, September 21, 2010

Join in a worldwide vigil, part of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on September 21 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the Annapolis Friends Meeting House, 351 Dubois Road, 21401. Light refreshments at 6:30 PM. The gathering is of all who are concerned about and work to reduce violence in our community and in the world–religious and spiritually-based groups, and men, women and children (see www.internationaldayofpeace.org). The evening, hosted by the Annapolis Peace and Justice Center, will ask participants to share their spiritual journeys toward peace, and to identify peacemaking organizations worthy of prayer and other means of support. Light House Shelter Ride for Shelter, Sun., Sept. 26, 2010

Participants, volunteers, and sponsors are needed for the Sixth Annual Ride for Shelter fundraiser on Sun., Sept. 26, 2010 at the Severna Park Park-N-Ride (Jones Station Rd. & Ritchie Hwy., Arnold). Registration is at 12 noon and the ride starts at 1 pm; riders will enjoy scenic 5, 10, or 20 mile rides along the B&A Trail, and there will be free kids’ activities, free refreshments and snacks, and exciting prizes for participation and fundraising achievement levels. Volunteers are needed on the day of the ride between 11:00 am–5:00 pm to assist with registration, set up, kids’ activities and clean up and to help on the bike routes to direct people and serve water, etc. For more information visit web site: www.RideforShelter.com, and contact Melanie Quinn at 410-268-4251 or [email protected].

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland

Individuals and groups can assist the homebound. Volunteer as little as an hour a month to make a world of difference. Drivers needed to deliver meals Monday through Friday (holidays included) between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. Volunteers also needed to accompany drivers, pack meals, or make birthday or other greeting cards to be delivered with the meals. Many opportunities are flexible, and training is provided. Locations are in Glen Burnie (Pascal Senior Center), Annapolis (St. Martin’s Lutheran on Forest Dr.), and Severna Park (Woods Church). Routes in Cape St. Claire/St. Margaret, Crofton, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Odenton and Old Mill communities are in urgent need. Sarah’s House Volunteer Orientations –Every Friday

Sarah’s House is a supportive housing program for homeless women, children, and men in Anne Arundel County providing case management, childcare, transportation and employment services at Ft. Meade.  Volunteer orientations are offered most Friday evenings 7:00pm-8:30pm at Sarah’s House.  Volunteers can work directly with guests or behind the scenes. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, businesses and groups of all faiths and ages. There is an ongoing need for donation of items such as large diapers, baby wipes, general cleaning supplies, bathroom tissue and more. Volunteers 14 and under must have adult supervision.   • 6:00-11:00 pm, Fri., Oct. 15, 2010, Oktoberfest Fundraiser: Sarah’s house will benefit from proceeds of the event. There will be live music by the Rhinelanders, dancing, and a buffet and drinks will be available for purchase. There will also be a dance performance by The Polka Kids. SPCA of Anne Arundel County

Volunteers, age 18 and up (or 13-17 with parental accompaniment), are needed to walk dogs, socialize cats, provide foster care for “in-need” animals, help with adoption shows, bathe and brush dogs or help with any other available opportunities. Regular volunteers walk dogs, play with cats, provide foster care for “in-need” animals, help with adoption shows, bathe and brush dogs, assist potential adopters, and help with events.
