Former Navy Athlete Killed In Afghan Chopper Crash.  A former Navy lacrosse player was among the nine international military personnel killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Tuesday. Brendan Looney, of Silver Spring, was a 2004 graduate of the Naval Academy.His family was to receive his body Wednesday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.Funeral arrangements are not known at this time.

Report: Baltimore Metro Roads Among Nation’s Worst. The Baltimore metro is on a top 10 list of places with roads that are in terrible shape. And the national transportation research group TRIP predicts that the state and local budget squeeze, combined with a lack of a long-term federal surface transportation program, will mean rough urban roads will just keep getting worse.Baltimore is No. 10 in the hit parade of major cities with pavements in poor condition.

Maryland’s First Slots Parlor To Open Next Week. Officials said Maryland’s first slots casino is on track to open by the end of the month in Cecil County. A spokesman for Penn National Gaming said the company is working to open the 1,500-machine Hollywood Casino Perryville on Sept. 30.Last week, the company said it might push back the opening while state regulators decide whether they had interfered with another effort to build a casino in Anne Arundel County.

“Preppy Burglar” Sought In Home Break-In. The Howard County Police Department is seeking a man it referred to as a “preppy burglar” because of his clothing worn during a break-in.Officers said the man forced his way into a home in the 7600 block of Browns Ridge Road on Sept. 14 and stole electronics and other property. The burglary occurred at about 10:25 a.m., police said. A  video surveillance system at the residence caught images of the man, who was described as 20-30 years old with an average build and brown hair. He was wearing a watch, dress shirt, dress pants and a red tie, police said.
