Police: Discovery Gunman Shot, Killed; Hostages Safe. Police shot and killed a man upset with the Discovery Channel network’s programming who took two employees and a security officer hostage at the company’s headquarters Wednesday, officials said. All three hostages escaped safely.Police spent several hours negotiating with him after he burst into the suburban Washington building about 1 p.m. waving a handgun and with canisters strapped to his body.

Numbers Are In: Maryland’s Surplus Is Big. Maryland is ending fiscal year 2010 with a $344 million surplus, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.The Baltimore Business Journal reported that a bulk of the surplus comes from $12.6 billion in tax revenue, slightly over estimates.Per state law, the surplus will be dumped into the Rainy Day Fund.Early last month, the governor’s office confirmed to WBAL-TV 11 News that the state was expecting a surplus. Union officials said they hoped the surplus would bring an end to furloughs and pay cuts enacted earlier in the year as state officials worked to close a budget gap.

Harford County To Elect School Board. Voters in Harford County will now have a say in choosing some of their new school board members.Until now, board members were appointed by the governor.There are three elected seats up for grabs on the Harford County Board of Education, and 15 candidates are hoping to land a slot.”I am excited about it because now we have a say instead of somebody just being appointed by the governor,” said resident Diane Price.

State Senator Indicted On Extortion, Bribery Charges. A federal grand jury has indicted a Maryland state senator on charges of bribery, conspiracy, mail fraud and extortion in connection with a scheme involving Shoppers Food Warehouse.State Sen. Ulysses S. Currie, 73, of Forestville, was indicted Wednesday on 18 criminal counts charging that he and executives of Shoppers took part in a scheme in which Currie was paid by the company in exchange for using his official position to influence dozens of matters that benefited the supermarket chain and its executives.
