Annapolis Middle School Headed To Orange Bowl

The Annapolis Middle School Dance Company will become the first Maryland middle school to take the field at a college football bowl game on January 3, 2011, when the group performs before a live crowd of 75,000 people and a television audience of 10 million at halftime of the Discover Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla.

The performance will be the culmination of a four-day experience that will allow the Annapolis students to interact with 1,000 fellow student performers from across the country as well as work with some of the nation’s best choreographers.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and will provide our students with real world connections in dance education and an experience they may never be able to duplicate,” dance company director Kendra Smith said. “We are very proud and excited to represent our school and all of the dancers in our county.”
The 12-student dance company was nominated for the honor last spring, and ultimately selected to perform by Bowl Games of America.

Because the nomination was made last year, the current company will also include two Annapolis High School freshmen who were part of the middle school company in 2009-2010.

Students are in the process of raising money for the trip, and will hold a variety of fund-raisers in the coming months. Anyone interested in sponsoring the group or making a donation should call Annapolis Middle
School at 410-267-8658.
