Earl Threatens US Coast; OC Making Preparations.  Hurricane Earl, now a powerful Category 4 storm, barreled toward the U.S. coast early Tuesday after battering tiny islands across the northeastern Caribbean with heavy rain and winds that damaged homes and toppled power lines.

Police: Man Tried To Kill Self, Girlfriend In Crash.  Anne Arundel Police said they plan to charge a man with attempted murder and assault after he told police he tried to kill himself and his girlfriend by crashing their vehicle.Crews were called to the area of Brockbridge Road and Guilford Road in Jessup shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday after reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Construction Begins On Anne Arundel 9-11 Memorial. Construction began Monday on the Sept. 11 Memorial in Anne Arundel County.Contractors installed at the site two 2,000-pound steel beams from the World Trade Center, which will serve as the centerpiece of the memorial.The beams, which are mounted vertically in the shape of a V, are located in front of the fire and police headquarters building in Millersville.”Our firefighters, our police officers and first responders on a daily basis are putting their lives on the line to protect our citizens. This is a way of saying thank you for your service and thank you for protecting us in this society,” said county Executive John Leopold.

Zoo’s 6-Year-Old Okapi Dies. The Maryland Zoo said Monday that Karen, the zoo’s 6-year-old female okapi, died over the weekend.”Karen was a beautiful okapi, and a favorite of zoo staff and visitors,” said Mike McClure, the zoo’s general curator. “She will be missed by all of us.” Okapi are native to the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo and have been called “the short-necked giraffe of Africa,” according to zoo officials. They have longer front legs than rear legs, and they have relatively long necks.
