This is one of the more unusual murder/suicide plots in recent memory:

On Sunday, August 29, 2010 at approximately 4:40 p.m., members of the Anne Arundel County Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of Brockbridge Road and Guilford Road, Jessup for a single vehicle accident.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling southbound on Brockbridge Road at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway and traveling in a straight line into a storage area for large trash trailers.  The vehicle struck one of the trash trailers causing serious injuries to the two occupants.

The male driver and the female front seat passenger were transported to Shock Trauma with life threatening injuries.  The driver is identified to be Henry Hutchins (67 years of age) and the front seat passenger to be Carol Carter (60 years of age).  Both are from 11000-block of July Drive in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Evidence from the collision scene and statements made by Henry Hutchins indicated he purposely drove the vehicle into the trash trailer in an attempt to kill himself and Carol Carter with whom he had a 15-year relationship.

The Traffic Safety Unit conducted a preliminary scene investigation and assisted the Homicide Unit, who has taken over the investigation.

Based on evidence and statements by Hutchins, an arrest warrant has been obtained charging him with attempted first and second degree murder and first and second degree assault.  The charges will be served upon his release from medical care.

Currently, Carter is in critical, but stable, condition and Hutchins is in serious, but stable, condition at Shock Trauma.
