MD University System Investigates Gift Card Irregularities. The University System of Maryland is investigating how $40,700 in gift cards intended for needy families were distributed by University of Maryland-Baltimore’s School of Social Work staff and students. A state audit found university officials “could not document who received the gift cards or what was purchased with the gift cards,” which were paid for by a federally funded program. The Office of Legislative Audits’ February report said records were not maintained about how the gift cards were dispensed.

Man Charged After Girl, 7, Contracted STD.  A 22-year-old parolee faces charges of second-degree rape after a 7-year-old west Baltimore girl contracted a sexually transmitted disease.This is the second recent case in Baltimore where a child has contracted gonorrhea. The other case currently under investigation involves an 18-month-old toddler.According to a police affidavit, the alleged sexual abuse of the 7-year-old happened at the beginning of May inside the child’s home in west Baltimore.It came to light after the child showed up in an emergency room, police said.”The victim had an active case of gonorrhea. The mother’s live-in boyfriend stated he wanted to prove he didn’t do anything so he (agreed) to be tested,” the affidavit said. “(He) and (the mother) both tested positive for gonorrhea. (The boyfriend) agreed to speak with the detective and admitted he’d had sexual contact with the girl,” the affidavit states.

Truck Spills Ammonia; 2 Taken To Hospital.  Two officers were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure after a truck spilled ammonia Wednesday morning.A tanker truck traveling from Philadelphia to Lorton, Va., stopped at a company in Havre de Grace at about 10:30 a.m. When the truck started to leave the scene, it began spilling ammonia. The truck stopped, and hazmat crews checked the truck’s caps, finding that one had been left off.All of the truck’s caps were checked, and the truck was examined by Department of Transportation officials before it was allowed to resume traveling.

3 Local Students Bid For Spelling Bee Crown. Three local spelling aces are in Washington, D.C., to compete in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students are: Sam Osheroff, 11, from Clarksville Middle School in Howard County; Faith Ruppert, 14, of the Severn School in Anne Arundel County; and Robbie Palmisano, 13, of Hereford Middle School in Baltimore County.Competition was scheduled to begin Wednesday, with the winner being crowned Friday.
