Brooklyn Park Woman Finds Gun, Accidentally Shoots Self. A spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said a 43-year-old woman accidentally shot herself in the hand after discovering a shotgun in her home.The shooting happened at about 11 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 100 block of Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn Park, officers said.Police said the woman found the shotgun behind a couch, and picked it up.The weapon accidentally discharged, wounding the victim in her hand, police said.

Edgewater Man Killed In Deer Creek Accident.  Harford County Emergency Services said a 31-year-old man was trapped for some time under some rocks and had to be pulled out by bystanders. He died at a local hospital.Harford County officials said they got the call at about 3 p.m. Saturday.Officers said the man was trapped near Deer Creek in Rocks State Park in Jarrettsville across from the King and Queen Seat rock formation.Rangers said a first responder slipped and received a minor injury and was also taken to the hospital as well.

Man Injured In Boat Vs. Jet-Ski Accident.  Department of Natural Resources police are currently investigating a boating accident that injured a man Friday afternoon. Police said a power boat and a jet ski collided shortly before 5 p.m. near where the West and Rhode rivers meet just south of AnnapolisPolice said a 41-year-old man on the jet ski was cut by one of the boat’s propellers.

Judge Kills Arundel Mills Slots Referendum.  Opponents of a proposed slots casino at a suburban Maryland mall lost a legal battle when a judge ruled their effort to block the gaming site through a public vote on the matter was not legal. Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Ronald Silkworth ruled Friday that a zoning ordinance enacted to allow the facility is part of an appropriation package for maintaining state and local government and thus not subject to a referendum. Baltimore-based Cordish Cos. had sued the Anne Arundel County elections board. Alan Rifkin, attorney for two citizens group opposed to the mall slots and the Maryland Jockey Club, said he plans to appeal the decision.Rifkin said he respects the court’s order, but such ordinances “have always been subject to referendum.”

Longtime Senator Robert C. Byrd Dies At 92.  Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, a fiery orator versed in the classics and a hard-charging power broker who steered billions of federal dollars to the state of his Depression-era upbringing, died Monday. He was 92.A spokesman for the family, Jesse Jacobs, said Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va. He had been in the hospital since late last week.At first Byrd was believed to be suffering from heat exhaustion and severe dehydration, but other medical conditions developed. He had been in frail health for several years.
