Baysox Swept In Double Header

The Bowie Baysox dropped a pair of games to the Binghamton Mets on Thursday, after rain on Wednesday forced a doubleheader.  The Baysox offense was anemic, as they managed just seven hits between the two games, losing 3-1 in the first game and 2-0 in the second.

Game one starter Ryohei Tanaka dropped his sixth game of the season, allowing three runs off seven hits through 5.0 innings.  For the second game in a row, he did not walk any batters.

All of the scoring in game one was delivered via the long ball.  Third baseman Brandon Waring launched a ball over the left-center field wall in the top of the second inning to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead with his eighth homer of the year.  That lead was erased by former Baysox and Orioles shortstop Luis Hernandez, who uncorked a solo shot of his own in the bottom half of the inning.

Binghamton catcher Mike Nickeas doubled to left field off Tanaka in the bottom of the third inning, before the Japanese hurler gave up his second home run of the night, a two-run blast by Eastern League runs leader Kirk Nieuwenhuis that gave the B-Mets a two-run lead that they would carry for the rest of the game.

Right-hander Jim Hoey came on to pitch the final inning, and stretched his shutout streak to 13.1 innings with one hit allowed in the seventh inning.

Game two saw right-handed pitcher Zach Clark take the mound for the Baysox.  Clark has been excellent out of the bullpen, but gave up two runs off five hits through 3.0 innings in his first start of the year and wound up taking the loss.

Mets outfielder Lucas Duda led off the bottom of the second inning with a double to right field, and moved to third on a groundout.  He gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead as he crossed home on third baseman Eric Campbell’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Binghamton doubled their lead with another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.  Catcher Omir Santos led off with a double and reached third as second baseman Jonathan Malo hit a single up the middle to put runners on the corners.  Nieuwenhuis flied out to right field, but put the ball deep enough for Santos to score after tagging up.

The losses dropped the Baysox back to an even 30-30 record, and knocked them into third place in the six-team Eastern League Western Division, 9.0 games behind league leaders Altoona.

The Baysox road trip rolls on to Harrisburg, where they will open a three-game series on Friday, at 7:00 p.m.  They return to Bowie on Tuesday, June 15, for a six-game home stand against the Reading Phillies and Harrisburg Senators.

Those series will include some of the Baysox best events of 2010, including the Brad Begesen bobblehead giveaway on Thursday, June 17.  Bergesen was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year in 2008, after winning 15 games for the Baysox and went on to start 19 games in Baltimore in 2009, with a 3.43 ERA.  The first 1,000 fans ages three and up will receive the bobblehead in his likeness, presented by Optima Services.

The Baysox host a camp-out on the outfield for Boy Scouts on Friday, June 18 and and a Father’s Day picnic with the opportunity to play catch on the outfield on Sunday, June 20.  Sunday’s game will also give fans 18 and up a chance to win a big screen TV in the Miss Utility Diamond Dig.

The club holds its ninth annual Tribute to the Negro Leagues on Saturday, June 19, with former Negro League players available for autographs and pre-game ceremonies honoring the players who endured the color barrier in baseball.

To sign your scouts up for the camp-out, please contact Chris Rogers with the Baysox at (301) 464-4855.  Father’s Day picnic tickets can be purchased through Vince Riggs at (301) 464-4885.
