An Important Election

This morning, we received a press release from Allison Asti announcing her run for Circuit Court in Anne Arundel County. A few weeks ago, Judge Hackner doled out what amounted to a swat on the nose to a serial sexual offender.

I opined back then that the most important races (and most overlooked) are the ones for judges which come up so infrequently. While our local legislators are elected to short terms, our judges are with us for 10 or 15 years. Electing a rogue judge can literally impact the quality of life for a decade or longer.

How would your quality of life be in the County if all judges took the approach of Judge Hackner and allowed serial offenders to essentially walk free.  Think about it.

I don’t know much about Allison Asti beyond what she claims in her press release (after the jump), but you can be sure I will be looking into her candidacy–as well as the candidacies of her opponents before I cast my vote. I suggest you do as well.  There is no single position in local government which has a greater ability to directly impact the quality of life in Anne Arundel County than these judges. Please don’t take it lightly.  Allison Asti press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE

the two open Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge positions.

Democrat Governor O’Malley recently appointed two local attorneys, both Democrats, to fill the open judicial positions in conservative-leaning Anne Arundel County until the next scheduled
election, which is this fall.

Alison Asti, a Republican, is a member of the University of Maryland Law School Board of Visitors and a past President of the Maryland State Bar Association. Under Governor Ehrlich,
Ms. Asti was the Executive Director of the Maryland Stadium Authority. She has also been President of numerous other State, local and national bar associations and foundations.

Women Business Leaders of Maryland.

Alison is currently a member of The McCammon Group, a well-respected alternative dispute resolution firm in the Mid-Atlantic region. She is most proud of her role in bringing the NFL
Ravens to Baltimore. “I have a love for our community and a love for the law – running for Circuit Court Judge is a natural extension of this love and my commitment and service to our community,” said Asti.

“The citizens of Anne Arundel County deserve to have a choice when electing Circuit Court Judges,” Asti continued. “Our democracy is based upon checks and balances, and the election of
judges helps assure the public that judges are free from the influences of partisan politics as well as ensuring that the Judiciary reflects the values and makeup of the community they serve.”

This year’s judicial election is especially timely given that during Governor O’Malley’s three-plus years as Governor, according to campaign research, he has made 56 judicial appointments,
of which 53 were Democrats and only 3 were Republicans.

Alison Asti, a widow, has two adult children. She is a graduate of Severna Park High School and was honored as a “Distinguished Alumni.” She attended Duke University where she earned her
Bachelor’s and Master’s in Public Finance. She graduated from University of Maryland School of Law with honors, and was as an editor of the Law Review.
