O’Malley To Get Award For Promoting Biotechnology. Gov. Martin O’Malley is going to Chicago to receive the Bio Governor of the Year Award.O’Malley will get the award on Wednesday at the 2010 BIO International Convention.The governor is being recognized for promoting Maryland’s biotechnology industry. O’Malley will be promoting biotechnology companies in the state.In 2007, O’Malley created the Maryland Life Sciences Advisory Board to develop the industry in Maryland.

MD Asked To Join Battle Against Funeral Protesters. Attorney General Doug Gansler is being asked to support a battle in the Supreme Court against anti-gay protesters who bring inflammatory messages to military funerals. Raquel Guillory, a spokeswoman for Gansler, said Wednesday the attorney general’s office will give serious consideration to joining Kansas in writing an amicus brief in support of Albert Snyder. An attorney for Snyder, whose son Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder’s funeral in Westminster was protested by the Westboro Baptist Church, sent the request to Gansler on Monday. Guillory said the formal request has not been received.

Town Rejects Speed Cameras In Referendum.  One Carroll County town has rejected speed cameras.Residents of Sykesville voted Tuesday against an ordinance that would have made the town the county’s first municipality with speed cameras.Town Manager Matt Candland said the referendum vote automatically repeals the town’s ordinance.Of the 529 ballots cast, 321 were against the referendum. During last year’s election, 523 ballots were cast.

City Green Lights Baltimore Grand Prix.  Grand Prix racing looks to be on its way to the Charm City.The city’s Board of Estimates has approved a 5-year agreement with Baltimore Racing Development, with the first race to be held in August 2011. Drivers would race in a loop around downtown, passing by the Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards at speeds up to 185 mph.The Indy Racing League is expected to sign a sanctioning agreement in the next two weeks.City officials said the events could generate $11 million in tax revenue during the five-year period. It could also create nearly 2,000 jobs, and generate $250 million in spending.Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said the street race will “change the way the world sees Baltimore,” as a result of global exposure to millions of Indy Racing League fans.
