Herndon Climb A Disappointment

Superintendent Vetoes Grease

What used to be a rite of passage has turned into a laughing stock among alumni of the US Naval Academy.  Two weeks ago, outgoing Superintendent, Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler said that the climb was too dangerous and likely this would be the final year.

In what can only be interpreted to be his move toward eliminating the climb, Fowler ordered that the monument not be slathered in grease.  What has taken prior classes hours to accomplish was over and done in just over two minutes this afternoon. Last year’s climb was completed in 1:14:38.
