Cinco De Mayo Warning

Revelers Cautioned To Watch Alcohol

The City of Annapolis Police Department (APD) will have DUI Saturation Patrols in place and be placing an even greater emphasis on traffic safety throughout the City on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 as people celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers.

Meaning “the 5th of May” in Spanish, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862 when a smaller Mexican army turned back French invaders. The holiday is more commonly observed in the United States than in Mexico.
Over the past several years, Cinco de Mayo has become a drinking and partying holiday – much like Saint Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras.

Extra patrols will be working in an effort to crack down on DUI violations, and citizens are asked to call APD at 410-268-9000 if they see anyone they think is attempting to drive while impaired.
