MD Hopes To Win $250M In Federal Education Grants.  Maryland has released its application for up to $250 million in federal education funds.The state is applying for the funds through the Race to the Top program. Money is awarded to states that demonstrate innovative ideas to reform education. Maryland did not participate in the first round of Race to the Top applications.

O’Malley Signs 170 Pieces Of Legislation. Gov. Martin O’Malley signed legislation focusing on health care into law on Tuesday, hours after the Maryland General Assembly adjourned.O’Malley signed 170 pieces of legislation, including a measure creating civil penalties for people who make false health claims.

Those Who Don’t Fill Out Census To Get Visits. There are only four days left to mail back your 2010 census form, and if you fail to answer the 10 questions, you could get a visit from a census taker starting next month.Starting May 1, census takers will try up to six times to reach residents who didn’t fill out their forms.If they come to your door, U.S. Census Bureau spokeswoman Sylvia Ballinger said you are required by law to answer their questions.

FBI To Probe Beating Of Student. Federal authorities are joining local officials probing the beating of a University of Maryland student by three Prince George’s County police officers.A video of the March 3 incident in College Park during a rowdy celebration of a basketball victory contradicts charging documents filed against two students and prosecutors have dropped assault charges against them.
