Cardin Explains Health Reform Perks To Businesses. Sen. Ben Cardin met with small business owners on Monday to try to help sell the new health care reform law.The senator outlined how the new law helps small businesses, specifically getting a sliding-scale tax credit to small employers with fewer than 25 employees.Eligible companies will also receive tax credits of up to 35 percent of their contribution toward the employee’s health insurance premium.

Experts: Wet Weather Causing More Bay Pollution. Maryland natural resources officials said this year’s wet weather is washing more pollution into the Chesapeake Bay. Department of Natural Resources officials said storm runoff contains nitrogen and phosphorous from fertilizer on lawns and farms, as well as pollution from septic systems, sewers and roads.That can fuel oxygen-robbing algae blooms in the bay.

Man Pleads Guilty To Throwing Dog Off Bridge. A Brunswick man has pleaded guilty to tossing a Chihuahua off a bridge.David Beers, 35, whose trial was set to begin Monday, pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty — a felony — and theft under $500.Beers told investigators he got angry when the dog’s owners ordered him off their property after he had pulled into their driveway to make a cell phone call in June.

Athletes Urge Marylanders To Be More Healthy.  Former Baltimore Oriole Billy Ripkin and former Olympic ice skater Kimmie Meissner are urging Marylanders to be more health conscious. Gov. Martin O’Malley kicked off the state’s first Healthy Maryland Day in Annapolis on Monday with the two prominent Maryland athletes by his side. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said about 2.5 million adults in Maryland were overweight or obese in 2007.
