2003 Rape Case Cracked

Technology is amazing. The following is from a police report his morning.  It must be true–you can run, but you can’t hide!

On July 2, 2003, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to North Arundel Hospital for a report of a rape. The 13-year-old female victim stated that she was walking from her home to a friend’s residence in Severn when she was accosted and raped by a male suspect. The suspect approached the victim, threatened her and took her to a nearby dead end road. The suspect then assaulted and raped the victim. The
victim was taken to a North Arundel Hospital, where an exam was completed and evidence was recovered and immediately sent to Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Crime Laboratory for DNA testing to be conducted. In November of 2003, DNA from the crime was entered into the database.

UPDATE:
Detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division were recently alerted that the DNA profile from the aforementioned rape case matched that of a convicted felon whose DNA was entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) in 2009. Forensic chemists at the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Crime Laboratory received an initial match on January 11, 2010, and this match was confirmed on February 1, 2010.

Consequently, on March 16, 2010, the investigation led detectives to Grand Chute, Wisconsin, where the suspect, Donnell Thomas Lee Bellamy, 30, of W. Wilson Avenue in Appleton, Wisconsin, was located and taken into custody with the assistance of the Grand Chute Police Department and the Appleton City Police Department. The suspect has since been charged with 1st Degree Rape, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Kidnapping and Stalking. The suspect, currently in the custody of the Grand Chute Police Department, waived his right to an extradition hearing and will be returned to Maryland at an undisclosed time.
