Cardinal Gibbons School To Close

Catholic School Closed By Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Baltimore has announced that one of the schools to be closed this year will be Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore. This is a shock as the school is considered one of the top schools in the area both academically and in sports.

It has been speculated that St. Jane Frances in Pasadena may also be among the other schools. The Archdiocese is making parents aware this afternoon and will make a public statement tomorrow.

The news was initially delivered by the school’s Facebook page about an hour ago:

At the end of this academic year, the Cardinal Gibbons School will close it’s doors. As part of the consolidation of the Catholic School System, the Archdiocese of Baltimore has chosen CG as one of the schools to close. James Cardinal Gibbons, pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.

The school would have celebrated its 40th year in 2012.  Here is the official statement from the school:

Until recently, Cardinal Gibbons’ administrators hoped that by pursuing every known option we could avoid having our school closed by the Archdiocese. Unfortunately, these efforts did not result in a positive decision for our school. What we do have is a shared dedication to our students and their continued success.

Our administration’s first priority is to minimize the disruption in the lives of our current students, prospective students, faculty, administration and their families. To facilitate a smooth transition in changing schools, other Catholic school administrators have agreed to accommodate as many students as possible in time for the next school year.

We ask that all of you who comprise the Cardinal Gibbons community pray that the future of our students remains on track to grow in a Christian atmosphere conspicuous for honor, challenge, responsibility, scholarship, and devotion.

We will continue to keep you apprised as additional details and activity emerge.
