Annapolis Mayor Under Fire

CAO Appointment Challenged

When Josh Cohen took office in December, he realized that he had a tough road in front of him. As he began to dig a little deeper, he began to realize it was much more difficult than anticipated. He has faced three record breaking snow storms, making a decision to cut programs and to lay off city employees.  Could he have handled the snow removal better? Absolutely! Were there alternatives to laying off employees? Perhaps. Is Annapolis on the right track? For the most part, it seems so.

However, there is dissension from many angles. The Unions (who supported Cohen’s bid for Mayor) are upset at the layoffs. And judging from this mailer, which is scheduled to arrive in mailboxes today, it will only get worse before it gets better. This flier is reportedly being personally funded by a member of the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee–the very committee that ushered Cohen into the primary after Zina Pierre stepped aside. We tried to contact Nick Berry, Chairman of the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee and he had not responded by press time. Once we receive a comment, we will publish it.

We sent his flier to Cohen for a comment this morning. It seemed that Cohen was aware of the flier and had this to say:

Since taking office, I have been making a number of positive changes to make Annapolis a more effective, efficient and transparent government. Some of these changes don’t sit well with people who support the old way of doing things, but I believe more than ever that Annapolis needs the new approach that my administration is taking.

Annapolis Mayor, Joshua J. Cohen

Judging from the tone of this flier, and some recent posts on two local blogs (Annapolis Political Scene and King of George), it appears that the dirty politics which permeated the elections last year will be resurfacing.  Curiously, a long time political blog, Annapolis Capital Punishment has become notably apolitical in recent months. Stay tuned!
