Woods Offers Mea Culpa, What About Local Leaders

As Tiger Woods takes to the national spotlight at PGA headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; two questions remain. Will his wife, Elin Nordegren be by his side? And can his golf career survive the scandal? Tiger screwed up and was not prepared for what went down late last year.

While we are a long way from Tiger and warm sunny climes of the PGA, we do have some officials in our area who were indeed unprepared for their own kind of emergency–Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold and Annapolis Mayor Joshua J. Cohen.

We have said that both the County and City have done an adequate job of snow removal, there is a lot of room for improvement–just like Tiger. The snows are beginning to melt and normalcy is beginning to return to the schools. But, we are not out of the woods (pardon the pun) just yet. We have several more weeks of winter and a potential storm headed our way next week.  The questions remain, what will the County and City do to make sure that the snow removal is handled more effectively the next time?

In December, Annapolis  Chief Administrative Officer, Doug Smith, made a PowerPoint presentation. That alone did nothing to improve the snow response. Last week, we offered what we felt were some commons sense suggestions to handling the situation. The citizens (and voters) are a very forgiving bunch, but only if they can be assured that their leaders are truthful and effective.

Mayor Cohen made a ridiculous statement a few days ago claiming that “all” snow emergency routes would be clear by 8:00am on Thursday (yesterday). Guess what?  It is missteps like these, not the actual handling of the snow, that may prove to be a downfall.

Fortunately for Tiger Woods, his budget is in much better shape than either the County or City and he has hired avery expensive team of public relations consultants to guide his message (County Exec Leopold and Mayor Cohen, please don’t get any ideas from Tiger Woods) as he recovers from his scandal. But the citizens of Annapolis and Anne Arundel also deserve an explanation as well. Just like Tiger, you need to tell us what you did wrong, how you will correct it, and how you will handle yourself in the future.
