Storm Update #2: Emergency Declared In Annapolis

Annapolis Mayor Orders ALL Vehicles Off Streets

From the Mayor’s office:

Mayor Joshua J. Cohen has declared a state of emergency as of 8:15 a.m. Saturday for Annapolis because of blizzard conditions. Heavy snow conditions and high winds have created treacherous road conditions across the city.

Mayor Cohen has declared that ALL vehicles will be prohibited from operating on any street within the city limits except snow equipment, emergency vehicles or others authorized by the Mayor.

The National Weather Service is predicting final accumulations of between 18 to 24 inches. With sustained winds of between 15 mph and 25 mph – and gusts of up to 40 mph – the possibility of blowing snow and “white-out” conditions are likely. The blizzard warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Saturday. Separately, a coastal flood advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Saturday.

The state of emergency declaration enables the city’s emergency operations personnel to tap additional resources from the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, such as Humvees for police, and trigger potential reimbursement options for emergency response and snow removal. Key city departments – Public Works, Emergency Management, Fire and Police – continue to monitor the storm and coordinate resources.

Department of Public Works are working around the clock to try to plow the Emergency Snow Routes and the Snow Connector Routes, and Mayor Cohen asks for your patience as crews make progress on clearing city roads. Separately, DPW dropped off sandbags to City Dock and the 2nd Street Pumping Stations on Friday.

If you have questions about the snow emergency, please contact the city’s Emergency Management office at 410-216-9167. The DPW operations line (410-263-7967) is staffed on Saturday until 7 p.m. to answer residents’ questions about the snow removal process. After hours, residents can report Public Works emergencies on the City’s 24-hour emergency hotline (410-224-2140). If you have an emergency, please call 911. Go to the city’s Snow Page to find snow route maps and emergency routes along with other important weather-related information.

In an effort to allow plows to keep up with the accumulations, the City began towing cars on Friday night off the Emergency Snow Routes. Those cars have been dropped off at the City Dock parking lot.

As a reminder of the status of city services and facilities:

— Annapolis Transit bus service will remain shut down on Saturday, Feb. 6. The level of service for Sunday, Feb. 7 will be determined based upon road conditions. Call 410-263-7964 for more information.

— With DPW crews focusing on snow removal, no refuse services will be provided Monday, Feb. 8 and Tuesday, Feb. 9. This includes trash, recycling and yard waste collection. There will be no makeup days. This decision to cancel trash/recyling pickup was also made to ensure the safety of residents and our crews because placement of refuse containers becomes “shaky” at best on piles of plowed snow.

— The Truxtun Park Rec Center will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 6. The status for Sunday, Feb. 7, has yet to be determined.

If you have a power outage, you can contact BGE at 1-877-778-2222.

Anyone in need of shelter during the storm should contact the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services at 410-421-8400 or 410-863-4888.
