Mayor Tells Employees It Is Likely
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Annapolis Mayor, Joshua Cohen as advised employees that layoffs and furloughs are likely as he tries to close a $9 million budget deficit.
While they are negotiating with the various unions (whose agreements are up in June 2010), it does not seem likely that the crisis can be solved by cutting expenses. So far, Cohen has eliminated the City published magazine and the Sister Cities program.
“I was hoping we could get through this without having to do layoffs,” Cohen said. “Unfortunately, two months into my administration … it has become clear, even with reducing expenses … it is likely that layoffs will be necessary before the end of the fiscal year.”
