URGENT: Eye On Annapolis has made a donation to support the relief efforts in Haiti. Right now, money is the critical thing needed to get medical supplies and basic necessities to the people on the island. We have chosen to support Doctors Without Borders for this effort and encourage our readers to do the same. If not through Doctors Without Borders, but through a legitimate organization. Unfortunately scammers come out of the woodwork when disaster strikes. Here is a list (updated frequently) of organizations that have been vetted and are participating in the relief efforts. Even if it is only $5, please give. It could have been us!

Haiti Rocked By Another Quake. A powerful new earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday, shaking rubble from damaged buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country’s capital was devastated by an apocalyptic quake. The magnitude-6.1 temblor was the largest aftershock yet to the Jan. 12 quake. The extent of additional damage or injuries was not immediately clear. Wails of terror rose from frightened survivors as the earth shuddered at 6:03 a.m. U.S. soldiers and tent city refugees alike raced for open ground, and clouds of dust rose in the capital.

College Financial Aid Deadline Approaching.  High school seniors hoping to cash in on financial aid should work on their applications now because the deadline to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is approaching. March 1 is the last day students can fill out the FAFSA form. Most students seemed to understand why there’s such a push to get it done.”It’s very important, because if you really want to go to college, it’s good to get that money so it doesn’t put as much of a burden on your parents,” said Annapolis High School student Jeremy Blackstone.Maryland has $110 million in grants and scholarship money on hand for students, and it won’t take long for those funds to dry up. Last year, there was an increase of 20,000 FAFSA applications.

Poll:  O’Malley Leads Ehrlich In Rematch. A new poll shows Gov. Martin O’Malley leading former Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich in a rematch by 9 percentage points.The poll released Wednesday by Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies found O’Malley, a Democrat, had 46 percent of support compared to 39 percent for Ehrlich, with 13 percent undecided.Ehrlich has not said whether he plans to run again.

O’Malley Tries To Balance Budget. Gov. Martin O’Malley, banking more on job creation than reducing government to bounce back from the recession, avoided many layoffs in his budget proposal Tuesday and helped fill a $2 billion budget hole by taking on debt.”What we have to be about this session is doing everything in our power to create jobs, to protect and save jobs, and also to protect and create the conditions that allow us as a people to create jobs and greater opportunity,” the governor said.
