Ravens Start Playoffs With Win.  From the very first play, Ray Rice and the running Ravens made the team of the last decade look like the pushovers of the new one. Rice burst up the middle for an 83-yard touchdown with frigid fans still settling into their seats, Tom Brady turned the ball over three times on the first four possessions and Baltimore knocked off New England 33-14 on Sunday in a stadium where the Patriots had never lost a playoff game.

Families Hail Fire Crews After Water Rescue. Two families are hailing firefighters as heroes after a rescue saves two girls from an icy creek.The 12-year-old girls fell through the ice on Cox Creek at Kent Island on Saturday.A neighbor who lives along the water saw them and called 911. The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the scene.

Anne Arundel Officer Injured In Crash.  An Anne Arundel County Police officer is recovering at Shock Trauma after being struck by a vehicle.It happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday along westbound Route 100 at Route 170 near Severn.An Anne Arundel county fire official said a 30-year-old male officer was conducting a traffic stop outside his vehicle when he was struck by a pickup truck.

BGE: Expect Higher Bills Due To Cold Snap.  Baltimore Gas and Electric said its customers should expect more energy use and higher bills this winter due to the subfreezing temperatures. BGE officials said the likely increase in bills is not because the cost of home heating has gone up.A frigid December and January have kept temperatures mostly below freezing. BGE spokeswoman Linda Foy said even if you’ve tried to keep your thermostat at a set temperature, it may not have helped.
