Officer Involved Shooting

Officer Run Down, Suspect At Large

From a press release just sent by the Anne Arundel County Police Department:

On January 12th at approximately 4:00 a.m., officers responded to the 2000 block of Tea Island Court, in Odenton, for a call of two male subjects going through vehicles. When the first officer arrived he walked into the court and observed a Kia Sportage (small SUV) in the roadway.

The vehicle immediately drove at the officer and he believed the vehicle was attempting to strike him. The officer drew his service weapon and fired at the vehicle, which struck the officer, knocking him to the ground. The vehicle drove into a dead end, stopped, and two male suspects fled on foot. The officer who was struck was unable to pursue them. Within minutes, other arriving officers searched the area and located one suspect, who was taken into custody. That suspect was not struck by the rounds fired by the officer.

Police canine and aviation units were called to the area to search for the second suspect, who has not yet been located. The on-scene investigation is continuing at this time. It is unknown if the rounds fired by the officer struck the second suspect. Upon inspection of the suspect vehicle, officers observed a handgun in the area of the front seat.

The officer who was struck by the vehicle was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and has been released. He is 33 years old, and a nine and a half year veteran of the department. He will be on mandatory administrative leave.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Jason DiPietro at 410-222-3415. Citizens may also use Metro Crime Stoppers to report information anonymously.
