Watch Out For Non-Bargains

Borders, the huge bookstore in the Annapolis Mall really needs to learn a lesson in pricing and in customer service. After the holidays, one would expect there to be some sales. After all, the entire mall seemed plastered with sings proclaiming 60%  or 70% off.

Apparently at Borders, their signs for “thank you” cards are saying 15% more! In addition to books, CDs and gifts, Borders sells cards. A box of cards from Crane & Co. stationers was marked $13.00 on the box by the manufacturer; yet only had a bar code from Borders. When it was rung up, the amount was $15.00. When questioned, the sales clerk was clueless and called for a manager. The manager said that was only a suggested price and that they could charge anything they wanted.

Most larger stores buy in volume and are offered discounts and are able to pass them along to their customers. But when Borders takes that attitude, it certainly makes one wonder if they are overpricing the rest of their non-book merchandise. The moral of the story, buyer beware!

I can’t remember the last time I bought something from a brick and mortar store. Say after me…Amazon.com!
