Annapolis Crime Way Down

Mayor Credits Chief

The City of Annapolis Police Department has released the City of Annapolis crime statistics for 2009 stating that Part One crimes (serious offenses)were the lowest since 1975.

Notable figures include:

  • Homicide down 50%
  • Robbery down 37%
  • Aggravated assault down 15%
  • Violent crimes down 24%
  • Property crimes down 38%

This city has likely never been so safe in my lifetime. That result did not happen on its own – it took a team effort. From Chief Pristoop’s leadership and the front-line enforcement by our officers to the cooperation among our local, state and federal partners, we are setting a standard for deterring serious crime in Annapolis. I applaud their efforts.

The City of Annapolis Police Department (APD) has published the City of Annapolis crime statistics for 2009. The 1,224 Part One crimes reported in the City are the lowest number recorded since Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) began in 1975.

There were 680 fewer Part I Offenses reported in 2009 than in 2008. Part 1 crimes include serious offenses such as homicide, aggravated assault, rape and some theft and property crimes.  In 2009, homicide in the City was down 50 percent, robbery was down 37 percent and aggravated assault was down 15 percent.

“This city has likely never been so safe in my lifetime. That result did not happen on its own – it took a team effort,” Mayor Cohen said. “From Chief Pristoop’s leadership and the front-line enforcement by our officers to the cooperation among our local, state and federal partners, we are setting a standard for deterring serious crime in Annapolis. I applaud their efforts.”

The total number of violent crimes in the City decreased 24 percent when compared to 2008. Property crimes were reduced by 38 percent.   “These numbers demonstrate a continuing significant decrease in crime in Annapolis,” said Chief Michael Pristoop. “It is a credit to the hard work of every member of the Police Department. Statistics, while a nice benchmark, do not tell the whole story. More important is the sense we get from residents and visitors that they feel safer and more connected to their Police Department.” The last time the Annapolis Police Department saw numbers under 2,000 for Part One Offenses was in the late 1970’s.
