Annapolis, MD (December 19, 2009)-Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold is stationed at the Emergency Operations Center with other County agencies to monitor and coordinate the response to winter weather currently in our area.

“The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for our area.  I urge everyone to stay home and avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.  Anyone who must venture out on the roads should exercise caution while driving as heavy snow and high winds are creating hazardous driving conditions.” County Executive Leopold said.

“Additionally, I urge everyone to utilize the following driving and cold weather safety tips”:

* Use extreme caution while driving.  Wet roads will freeze overnight and icy road conditions will exist.
* Adjust speed and allow for greater stopping distance between vehicles.
* Dress appropriately for the cold weather by wearing coats, hats (as much as 50% of body heat is lost through the head), scarves or knit masks to cover the face and mouth, and gloves or mittens.
* Dress in layers of loose-fitting clothes, including extra socks.  Wool, silk or polypropylene inner layers hold in more body heat than cotton.
* If shoveling snow, take frequent breaks to avoid over exertion.
* Drink plenty of water.  Avoid alcohol and caffeine since they can cause the body to loose heat more rapidly.
* Never leave space heaters on or unattended.
* Always use generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents.  Follow manufacturer’s instructions for safe usage.
* NEVER use generators inside your home, garage, crawl space or other enclosed or partially enclosed space.

The County Executive and Captain Eric Hodge, Director of the Office of Emergency Management will participate in an 11:00 a.m. conference call with the National Weather Service and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency for an update on weather conditions.
