Shropshire To Call For Investigation

Alderman Plans To Involve US and MD Attorney General In Hate Crime

UPDATE: We have learned that a statement from Classie Hoyle may be forthcoming tomorrow–4 days after the fliers were distributed.

On Monday’s Annapolis City Council meeting, Alderman Sam Shropshire will be introducing two letters for signature by the Council members and the Mayor condemning the hate literature that was distributed in the Ward 3 Election this week.

Shropshire’s fellow council member, Classie Hoyle has refused to condemn or comment on the flier. The disgusting flier targeted  her opponent Scott Bowling, and likely played a significant role in her victory on Tuesday.

Dirty politics is one thing, but condoning hate crimes is another and Classie Hoyle’s silence speaks very loud.

Shropshire, unable to run for re-election because of his unsuccessful primary run for Mayor was also a target of the flier.  Among other things, the flier states that Scott Bowling and Sam Shropshire “eat dinner together, talk about boys together“. The flier also accuses the two men of child abuse and says that “your sons and husbands are not safe“.

According to Shropshire:

I will be circulating two letters for signatures of aldermen and mayor on Monday evening.  They will be addressed to the State Attorney General and the FBI–both calling for immediate and thorough investigation leading to prosecution of a hate crime.  I will also introduce a resolution calling for a swift and thorough investigation by our City Attorney and Election Board.   I will also introduce legislation–a charter amendment–that will officially outlaw such “hate crimes” within the City.  This will mirror Maryland State law and federal law.I have asked my pastor and other members of the the Annapolis Ministerial Association to come and speak at City Council.

This type of despicable behavior has no place in our lives. Every citizen of Annapolis should be enraged and plan to attend the City Council meeting on Monday October November 9, 2009 at 7:30pm at City Hall (160 Duke of Gloucester St.)
