Walter Brooks Death Confirmed From H1N1

MD Says Teen Died From H1N1

State Health Dept. confirmed Walter Brooks died as result of H1N1

In an unusual move, the MD health department has confirmed that Brooklyn Park teenager Walter Brooks did indeed die of complications of H1N1. Typically, the department does not release names, but did confirm Brooks’ death due to the publicity surrounding it.

The health department said there appeared to be no underlying causes.

With no underlying causes, this brings into question the capability of the hospital who initially treated Walter Brooks.  According to Brooks’ family, Walter was taken to the local emergency room and sent home without any blood work or further investigation into his flu-like symptoms. The following day, he was admitted to another hospital in serious condition, transferred to yet another hospital where he died.

Certainly the dangers of the H1N1/Swine flu have been known for some time. The virus devastated tourism in Mexico for many months, and locally, Folger-McKinsey school in Severna Park was closed for several days due to an outbreak.

County schools spokesman, Bob Mosier credits the school district’s prior preparation (last sping) to being prepared and informed this fall. The question remains, why isn’t one of the larger regional hospitals aware?

Back on August 31, 2009, USA Today published a report card on hospitals nationwide.  As we reported, several of our area hospitals fared poorly on treatments for heart attacks and pneumonia.
