Officers Save Man From Burning CarAnne Arundel Police Department

A lot of times, we have a tendency to pigeonhole the police as the guys looking for speeders or drug dealers. Yes, that is part of their job, but as true public servants, their heroism and selflessness really shines at times.

Take this instance:

On September 26, 2009, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Corporal Todd Betz and Corporal Thomas Trott of the Special Operations Section were working a crime suppression detail in the area of the Eastpark Shopping Center located in the 7900 block of Crain Highway in Glen Burnie when they observed a vehicle on fire in the parking lot.

The officers immediately drove over to the vehicle, a 1992 Nissan 300ZX, and saw that it was fully engulfed in flames. They also noticed a male subject lying slumped over in the driver’s seat with his seat belt still fastened. The officers quickly exited their vehicle and began yelling and banging on the victim’s vehicle in an attempt to alert him, but the victim remained unresponsive. At that juncture, the officers tried to open the driver’s side door, but it would not open. The officers then reached through an open window, removed the driver’s seat belt and pulled the driver to safety through the open window. Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to extinguish the fire. Additionally, the victim, a 25-year-old male from Glen Burnie, was checked and found to be alert and uninjured. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was sleeping in the vehicle and that the car fire may have been caused by a mechanical malfunction in the engine.
