O’Malley: Other State Budgets Faring Worse. As he deals with a budget deficit made worse by the souring economy, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has noted the state is not as bad off as many others. That has prompted Republicans in Annapolis to complain the Democratic governor is trying to divert attention from the state’s problems.

Animal Control Says More Bats Getting In Homes. A Baltimore animal control official said reports of bats getting into homes are up this summer.Bob Anderson, the city’s director of the Bureau of Animal Control, said that five of 60 bats captured this summer were infected with rabies.

MD Closing 3 Animal Health Laboratories. The Maryland Department of Agriculture is closing three of its five animal health laboratories.The department said in a release issued Aug. 26 that laboratories in Centreville, Oakland and College Park will close, while facilities in Salisbury and Frederick will remain open.

Woman, 82, Leads Trooper On Chase, Rams Cruiser. Maryland State Police said an 82-year-old Cecil County woman led a trooper on a seven-mile chase, then rammed his cruiser. No one was injured in the collision, but Cpl. Steven Juergens said investigators are blaming a medical condition that may have compromised the woman’s judgment.
