BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport Nixes Free Half Hour
Gone are the days of running into the airport for a quick ticket exchange, picking up a loved one, or helping granny in with her bags. Last week, BWI quietly began charging customers to park in their formerly free lot. Yes, BWI is now charging $2 per half hour for the first two half hours and then $4 per hour beyond that.
While the airport still maintains a cell phone lot, the free half hour was a great convenience for many. There is no doubt that the change was driven by the economy as the airport struggles to contain costs. “It’s primarily a financial decision,” said Jonathan Dean, a BWI spokesman. “During this economic downturn BWI has worked to contain costs and raise revenue where possible.” The move is expected to generate an additional $500,000 per year.
I guess Annapolis isn’t the only one who is hurting for parking revenue
