A Mayoral Whoops

CORRECTION: Per Annapolis Politics, there are only three who are in compliance. We regret the error and thank Annapolis Politics for bringing the error to our attention.

Three Candidates In Violation Of  Election Laws

Can Moyer’s Election Be Recalled?dirty politics

Annapolis Politics has broken a story about three Mayoral candidates who are in violation of the City Election Code.

Apparently, one of the requirments of a legal campaign is to have a Chairman (or I suppose a “person”) registered for your campaign and this person must be a City resident.  This came to light after the Annapolis City Attorney, Stephen Kling, apparently discovered the requirement.  Why he was not aware of it prior to this is anyone’s guess and a whole other discussion.

Regardless, the unnamed candidates (thus far) have been given until Friday to name a Campaign Chairman or to end their candidacy.

What about the past two elections? Were these laws overlooked? Complied with? Can we have a recall election and get rid of the Mayor we have? I wonder!

It is likely that chairmen will be found, but it is good to know that dirty politics is alive and well in Annapolis!

  1. You’ve got it backwards….3 candidates were in compliance which means everyone else has a problem! And after talking with people who ran for office in 2005 and 2001, nobody can remember this requirement before, which means it’s probably new and the people who are already elected probably didn’t have this requirement…except maybe Paone and Arnett since they ran in special elections. You can still recall the mayor (or Aldermen) though…the code specifies that a recall election can occur with a petition signed by 30% of the registered voters of a ward (Alderman) or the whole city (Mayor).

  2. That makes it even more interesting. Did the Moyer machine slip a new regulation in just to give Joshie a leg up?
