The issue of underage drinking and substance abuse for many residents of Anne Arundel County is a growing concern with statistics showing the usage amongst our youth higher than state averages in various categories.  As a strategy to raise awareness regarding this issue, the Anne Arundel County Partnership for Children, Youth and Families, Coalition for Safe Communities and the Teens In Partnership Youth Advisory Board are announcing its 1st “Choose To Be Drug-Free” community awareness day event to include the 2009 Teen Summit, Parenting Workshops and Recreation and Resource Fair.

“Amazing things happen when people work together”, said Gregory Torain the Project Director of the Coalition for Safe Communities, which serves as an initiative of the Anne Arundel County Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. Julie Vanskiver, Youth Coalition Coordinator has put forth a tremendous effort in coordinating this year’s event and partnering with the Anne Arundel County PTA’s. Activities will commence on Friday, May 29, 2009 with two phenomenal speakers, Dr. Matt Bellace and Ty Sells who will be speaking at four county schools on such topics as “Natural Highs” and the “Power of Acceptance”. On Saturday, May 30th, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Annapolis High School, there will be a Teen Summit and coinciding Parenting Workshops with speakers, several workshops, prizes and food.  From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the athletic fields of Annapolis High School, the 1st Annual “Choose To Be Drug-Free” community awareness day Recreation and Resource Fair will take place.
