Media Inflection For Sotomayor

| May 27, 2009, 11:32 AM | 0 Comments

Did you ever wonder why….

Supreme Court Nominee Sonia "Suh to my ORRR"

Supreme Court Nominee Sonia "Suhto my OOOR"

This morning, every news station was aflutter with President Obama’s selection for the Supreme Court–Sonia Sotomayor. Granted, her name is not the most “pronouncable” name out there; but what was amusing was that for a brief second, it seemed that every news anchor was teleported back to the ancestral homeland of the nominee.

Mindy Basara, of WBAL-TV 11,  was notable in her pronunciation–“Suhto my OOOR”. It was as if for that brief second, she was broadcasting from “Puerrrto RRRRICO” and not on TV Hill in “Balmer”.  She doesn’t seem to do this with her own Italian rooted name– “Buh SERRRR uh”.

Yet Mindy is in good company. Many of my American friends have gone on vacation to “Coasta RRRRICA” and spent many a spring break in  ‘Meh HE co”. But go figure that when they are in Alberquerque, they go to New Mexico.

And why does this only seem to happen with Hispanic destinations and names? And what the heck does it have to do with Anne Arundel County?

Nothing…I’m just saying…and just channeling my inner Andy Rooney!
