Several Women Claim He Never Harassed Them

Yesterday, an impromptu “news conference” was held by a group of women who work for Anne Arundel County Executive, John Leopold. The message was simple–Leopold treats them with respect. While no one is naive enough to believe that Leopold is disrespectful to all women, it is a reasonable assumption that, if it was his nature, the targets would be women he felt as weak.

While Leopold may not have harassed or disrespected the group of mostly appointed female employees, it does not negate the allegations made by Karla Hamner of physical abuse and Marvenise Harris for sexual harassment.  And honestly, it’s similar to claiming that Charles Manson was a good guy because he didn’t kill some people. One cannot say that drunk drivers do not kill simply because they themselves have not been a victim.

While John Leopold seems very comfortable, some may smug, in his ability to deny and deflect any allegations, the solution is indeed to confront them. There is no need to be fearful of the truth; unless it is untrue.

If it is a political witch hunt, as Leopold suggests, let’s get to the bottom of it. If it is a money grab by the “victims”, as others have suggested, let’s get to the bottom of it. We have processes in place to handle these types of allegations and they are not unprecedented. Why is John Leopold so afraid of using them to clear his name?

And if these allegations are true, Mr. Leopold needs to get some help. Anger management or other counseling. The when the CEO of a large company gets in trouble with drugs or alcohol, he takes a leave, goes into rehab and comes out stronger.

In this case, actions speak louder than words.
