The Bowie Baysox (19-23) plated five runs in a big eighth inning and snapped a four-game skid with a 10-5 victory over the Trenton Thunder (27-15) on Sunday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park in Trenton.
In Bowie’s five-run eighth, Ryan Mountcastle drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and scored from first on Ademar Rifaela’s go-ahead RBI double to give the Baysox a 6-5 lead. Later in the frame, a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases before Cedric Mullins knocked in a pair with a two-run double and Anthony Santander came through with an RBI double of his own.
RHP Andrew Schwaab (0.0 IP, H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB) was dealt the loss for the Thunder and falls to 2-3 on the year.
The Baysox had 14 hits in the game, which is a season-high allowed by Trenton.
Mountcastle (3-4, RBI, R), Mullins (3-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R), Rifaela (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R) and Santander (2-5, 2B, RBI, R) all had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.
The four RBI for Mullins marked a new career-high, breaking his previous career-best mark of three.
The game was tied at five apiece in the seventh and Trenton had the go-ahead run at second with one away, but LHP Luis Gonzalez got a pair of groundouts to end the inning and keep the game tied.
Gonzalez (2.0 IP, BB, K) earned the win for Bowie to improve to 1-0 on the season. RHP Tanner Chleborad (1.0 IP, H) tossed a scoreless ninth in relief of Gonzalez.
Gosuke Katoh’s solo shot off of Baysox starter Hunter Harvey gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead in the first.
Trenton extended the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth as a pair of singles put two men on with two outs before Ben Ruta delivered an RBI single and a second run scored on a successfully executed double steal.
Harvey (n/d) gave up the three runs on five hits to go along with six strikeouts in four innings of work.
Bowie took the lead for the time being with a five-run fifth as back-to-back doubles from Martin Cervenka and Erick Salcedo put the visitors on the board, Mullins tied the game with a two-run blast off of Thunder starter Michael King and Mountcastle and Rifaela came through with RBI singles to make it a 5-3 game. The home run was Mullins’ sixth of the year.
In his Double-A debut, King (n/d) surrendered five runs on 10 hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 IP.
Chris Gittens tied the game at five apiece in the home half of the fifth with a two-run blast off of Baysox RHP Branden Kline (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K).
The Baysox return home to open a three-game set with the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium. First pitch of the series opener is set for 6:35 p.m. with LHP Keegan Akin (4-4, 3.22) on the mound for Bowie against Curve LHP Taylor Hearn (1-3, 4.46).
